NIRVANA: PERFECT HAPPINESS
BUDDHISM
-          founded by Gautama Buddha - “THE ENLIGHTENED ONE”
Þ    a rich Hindu prince who felt deeply moved by the poverty of the masses especially the beliefs on caste or karma.
Þ    He abandoned his rich palace and easy life to become a hermit. After much meditation, he started to teach Buddhism.

Buddhism - The teaching of Buddha that life is permeated with suffering caused by desire, that suffering ceases when desire ceases, and that enlightenment obtained through right conduct and wisdom and meditation releases one from desire and suffering and rebirth

4 NOBLE TRUTHS
1) man’s life is filled with suffering
2) man’s suffering is caused by his selfish desires
3) man can end his suffering by conquering his selfish desires
4) after conquering his selfish desires, man reaches the state of NIRVANA (perfect happiness)
  
Eight-Fold Path
(1) right belief, (views, knowledge)
(2) right aspiration, (purpose)
(3) right speech,
(4) right conduct, (action)
(5) right livelihood, (living)
(6) right effort,
(7) right remembrance, (mindfulness)
(8) right meditation (contemplation, reflection or thoughtful observation)
Proliferation of Buddhism

BRANCHES OF BUDDHISM
Mahayana- Greater Vehicle
- accepts the changes made by the Buddhist priests
- Tibet, China, Korea, Japan, Burma, Indochina, other countries of South East Asia


Hinayana- Lesser Vehicle
- adheres strictly to Buddha’s teachings and does not have priests
- Nepal and Ceylon
